Artist Exhibition Statement
Looking forward – Looking back is an exhibition that continues my focus on documentation. When I sift through memories of places that are important to my development as an artist, I often turn to places where I feel free. Beachside holidays, familiar suburban streets or buildings that speak of a sense of place.
As a mid career artist I feel as though I can look back over happy times with a sense of pride for what I’ve achieved. At the same time I’m experiencing changes physically and mentally that allow me to look forward with a sense of adventure and excitement.
Painting new places such as the Flinders Ranges and desert landscapes gives me a chance to grow as a painter.
As the great Slim Dusty sang ‘Looking forward, looking back – I’ve come a long way down the track. I’ve got a long way left to go, making songs (or paintings) from what I know’.
