John Olsen | Limited Edition Etchings on Paper

John Olsen (1928–2023) was one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, known for his expressive lines and distinctive interpretation of the Australian landscape. He won the Wynne Prize in 1969 and 1985 and the Archibald Prize in 2005.

Etching was an important part of Olsen’s practice. His early printmaking experience at Atelier 17 in Paris was followed by a renewed involvement in the medium with fellow artist Clifton Pugh around 1970.

His limited-edition etchings on paper explore waterways, birds, animals and the pleasures of everyday life. Combining lively detail with a sense of curiosity, they offer an intimate encounter with Olsen’s imaginative world. Examples held by the Art Gallery of South Australia include Lake Eyre in flood, Emus passing and Dinner II.
