Still life can be many things, hence the fascination this genre has exerted on both artists and viewers for centuries.  

This painting is intended as a celebration of Mother Nature’s generosity and as an act of gratitude for the beauty to be discovered and enjoyed if we only look closely.  I also wanted to examine the different textures of everyday items:  an antique jug, a basket, a cloth and fruit, in this case pears whilst also using colour to highlight their richness.  

Here, they are also meant to be supporting actors for the star of the show, the magnolias. I wanted to express the sumptuous luxury of the pale blooms so that the viewer can almost feel their petal-softness as well as the crispness and snap of the green and velvet-brown leaves.  

My purpose in painting is always a search for harmony and beauty and the consequent feeling of joy to be found in their discovery.
