Learn more about Fiona Haynes

Fiona Haynes’s practice transforms the overlooked, the discarded, and the timeworn into evocative contemporary artworks. Working from her studio in Brisbane, she gathers forgotten objects from op shops, antique stores, and second hand markets - everything from tarnished silverware to weathered breadboards and wooden boxes - and reimagines them as sculptural pieces with new purpose and quiet poetry.

Raised in Far North Queensland, Fiona grew up in a family where creativity wasn’t a hobby but a way of life. Her mother and sister were constantly sewing, painting, or making something by hand, and this environment of everyday craft deeply shaped her artistic instincts. The resourcefulness of regional life, the habit of mending and repurposing, and the joy of making something beautiful from what’s already around you all became foundational to her work.

Today, Fiona’s own art continues to celebrate the stories embedded in reclaimed materials. Each object she selects carries traces of past lives - scratches, patina, fingerprints of use - and she treats these marks not as flaws but as narrative threads. By assembling and reworking these elements, she creates pieces that feel both nostalgic and contemporary, honouring the craftsmanship of the past while inviting viewers to see value in the overlooked.

Her work aligns naturally with sustainability, storytelling, and the quiet magic of handmade objects come together. Fiona’s pieces remind us that beauty doesn’t need to be new - it only needs to be noticed.
